What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that detects surrounding brightness and switches a connected lighting circuit on or off. In landscape lighting, a photocell commonly turns lights on at dusk and off when daylight returns. The device helps automate outdoor lighting without requiring a person to operate a wall switch.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • A photocell responds to ambient light, not a preset clock.
  • Placement affects when the lighting circuit switches.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

Hands use a screwdriver to wire a small sensor on a wooden workbench outdoors

A photocell changes the state of an electrical control as surrounding light becomes brighter or darker. The sensor contains a light-sensitive component that responds to ambient conditions. A control module then sends or interrupts power to the connected lighting circuit.

Landscape lighting systems often pair a photocell with a low-voltage transformer. At dusk, reduced daylight causes the control to activate the lights. At dawn, increasing daylight causes the control to deactivate them. The sensor needs a clear view of natural light, because nearby fixtures, shade, or reflective surfaces can affect its response.

From the Toledo Electrician team

When we install or troubleshoot a photocell, we check its placement, wiring, and response to changing light. We also inspect whether nearby landscape fixtures or building surfaces are influencing the sensor. Our team confirms that the control works with the landscape lighting transformer and the intended switching method.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants pathway and garden lights to operate automatically each evening. A photocell mounted where it can sense natural daylight activates the landscape lighting after dusk and turns it off when morning light returns.
