What Is a Three-Way Switch?

A Three-Way Switch is a device that controls one light or lighting load from two separate locations. Unlike a standard single-pole switch, a three-way switch works with a second three-way switch through traveler wires. Common applications include hallways, stairways, and rooms with entrances at opposite sides.

Key Takeaways About Three-Way Switch

  • Two switches control the same lighting load.
  • Traveler wires connect the paired switches.
  • A three-way switch is not a dimmer by itself.

How Three-Way Switch Works

A Three-Way Switch system uses two switches to direct power along different paths to one lighting load. Each switch has a common terminal and traveler terminals. The traveler wires connect the switches, while the common terminal on each switch connects to the circuit supply or the light, depending on its position in the circuit.

Moving either switch changes the path through the travelers. That change turns the light on or off from either location, regardless of the other switch's position. The switch itself does not identify which location is on or off. A single-pole switch controls a light from one location, while a four-way switch can be added between three-way switches when control is needed from additional locations.

From the Toledo Electrician team

When we work on indoor lighting, we trace the common and traveler conductors before changing a three-way switch. We also check terminal placement and the condition of the box connections. This approach helps us distinguish a wiring fault from a worn switch.

Three-Way Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A hallway light may need control from both the foyer and the far end of the hall. A three-way switch at each location lets someone operate the same light from either point.
